COMPTON`S DERBY BID

Compton Bolter heads a maximum field of 14 packed with quality for tomorrow`s stg£50,000 Bet Direct Winter Derby at Lingfield Park.

Trainer Gerard Butler is using the 10-furlong contest on the Equitrack as a warm-up for his colt`s trip to the Dubai World Cup meeting at Nad al Sheba next weekend.

His four-year-old, who finished fifth in the 2000 Guineas last season, leaves at 3am on Monday for Dubai where he will run in the Godolphin Mile provided all goes to plan at Lingfield.

Butler said: 'He ran twice in Dubai last spring and the form worked out. He went on to run well in the 2000 Guineas, where he was a bit unlucky. They quickened up and caught him out and he just couldn`t get into the picture.'

The stiffest opposition to Butler`s charge may come through all-weather specialist Hail The Chief.

The Richard Hannon-trained four-year-old has progressed through the ranks on the all-weather, winning or coming second in all of his nine races on the sand.
